PCB Connection - COMBICON

Spring-Force Plug Connectors for Device Inputs and Outputs

The SPC 16 and ISPC 16 spring force plug connectors from Phoenix Contact establish a touch-protected connection of device inputs and outputs up to 76 A. The conductors of these high-performance devices are connected quickly without the need for tools by simply using the push-in spring-force connection. This spring makes it possible to connect rigid or flexible cables with cross sections up to 16 mm² without tools and with little use of force.

Both plug connectors have unrestricted 600 V UL approval in use group C and are thus appropriate for use on the international market. They are compatible with PC 6-16 headers and thus offer an alternative to plug connectors with screw connections. Furthermore, free-hanging wire-to-wire connections are possible with spring cage connections up to 76 A.

Right-Angled Connection Technology in minimum dimensions

The Combicon MCO headers from Phoenix Contact are equipped with an orthogonal connection technology in 3.5 pitch. Compared with headers in pitch 5, it is now possible to connect an additional pin per terminal point.

Versions with three, four and five pins are available. With the angled male connectors, these headers are particularly well suited for assembly on vertical PCBs in the ME and ME MAX electronic housings from Phoenix Contact.

It is also easy to combine headers in 3.5 or 5 pitch in the same ME/ME MAX housing. There are many options for connecting PCBs using combinations of different screw or spring force connector variants.

This year, this diversity will be perfectly completed again by the Device Connection Technology made by Phoenix Contact. So come and visit Nuremberg from May 27 – 29, 2008 and use the opportunity to get information on the latest products in power electronics. Phoenix Contact can be found in hall 12, booth 352.

Small Connectors - Great Impact

The new power connectors GIC 2,5 HCV together with the GMSTB 2,5 HCV complete the plug connector family for the 600 V UL approval. The plug connectors by Phoenix Contact feature a space-saving and compact design. Already in the 7.62 mm pitch, the plug connectors already have the unlimited 600 V UL approval in the use group C (1000 V acc. to VDE) due to the high voltage design. Therefore, nothing opposes the application on the international market.

Device inputs can be designed in a space-saving way with the GMSTB plug connector. Due to the inverted design of the GIC plug connector with female contacts, the device output becomes a touch-proof connection. With these versions, even free-hanging cable-cable-connections and PCB-PCB-connections are no problem. At a connection cross section of 2.5 mm flexible, the transmitted current is 16 A (at an ambient temperature of approx 60°C). For smaller connection cross sections and therefore smaller currents, the current carrying capacity curve has to be considered. The conductor connection is effected with the tension sleeve principle in the screw connection method.

Industrial Plug Connectors - PLUSCON

The Complete Range of Accessories for AS-Interface

AS-Interface enables the set-up of different topologies. Due to a complete range of accessories, user-oriented solutions can be implemented. Besides standard flat conductors with an outer sheath made of EPDM and TPE, the product range now also includes EPDM and TPE conductors with UL approval. These conductor types are highly flexible and resistant to lubricants. Using the fastening clip, two flat conductors can be fixed in parallel. The clip can be assembled within seconds due to a self-adhesive back side.

To set up different topologies, one and/or several branches have to be installed to “separate” the yellow flat conductor. Using the H-distributor with IP65/68/69k protection that is connected in parallel, this “separation” can be realized in a space-saving and easy way. For a direct connection between AS-i flat conductors and sensors and/or actuators, AS-i distributors are required. AS-i distributors with molded round conductors and M12 plug connectors with SPEEDCON provide for flexible and fast assembly. AS-i distributors with M12 socket and/or screw connection allow the application of the proven and pre-assembled round conductors with M12 plug connectors. These AS-i distributors fulfill the IP65/67 degree of protection and most of them also IP65/68/69k. The AS-i distributor with spring-force connection (COMBICON) with IP20 protection is suited for connecting flat conductors with round conductors of the same wire cross-section. This 4-pos. distributor is used for example in switch cabinets for supply or in the cable channel for the transition to round conductors suitable for use with drag chain.

Phoenix Contact offers a complete range of accessories for user-oriented AS-Interface solutions.

Increased time savings for connecting wires and coding

The new push-in contact inserts for Phoenix Contact’s Heavycon Series heavy-duty plug connectors reduce the time required for connecting wires and coding. Flexible wires with end sleeves or rigid wires can be connected directly to the push-in contact inserts without the need for tools. This makes the connection quick and easy.

The user can also save time and money by using the fast coding concept. Conventional coding with coding pins often requires several minutes to complete. With this new method, it is no longer necessary to remove the fastening screws for the false connection protector and exchange the coding pins. The plastic pins are merely inserted in the prescribed coding slits of the contact inserts.

Tension sleeve technology is used in the new contact inserts for the PE connection. The cable withdrawal forces of a tension sleeve connection are significantly higher than the withdrawal force of the standard PE head contact screws. The new contact inserts are available in pin numbers 6/10/16/24 for 500 V/16 A with a wire size of 0.5–2.5 mm2.

Plastic Screw Caps With Retaining Straps

Plastic screw caps with retaining straps are now available for the sizes M8, M12 and 7/8”. The retaining straps are attached directly to the cable or housing. Thus, the plastic caps are captively tied to the interface.

The screw caps consist of polyamide, the retaining straps of PUR and the seals of NBR. In screwed condition, the high protection class IP67 is met.
On the field side, the male and female contacts of the preassembled conductors are therefore sufficiently protected against moisture and other environmental influences. With the protection of the slots on the side of the device, not only the connection area is protected, but also the sensitive electronics on the inside of the device.

Surge Protection - TRABTECH

Combi-MCB – Surge Protection With Integrated Arrester Backup Fuse

VAL-CP-MCB… and VAL-CP-MOSO60… are combinations of arrester backup fuses and type 2 surge protection, and thus supersede the selection of an appropriate arrester backup fuse for the surge protection device. The arrester backup fuse, designed as miniature circuit breaker, is ideally adapted to the arrester characteristics of pluggable surge arresters, and thus ensures an optimal use of the performance capability.

Besides the pluggability of the surge arrester and the surge voltage resistant miniature circuit-breaker, VAL-CP-MCB… also features a status display and remote signaling option. The switching position of the backup fuse as well as the surge protection status can be determined on site and at a glance. A collective remote signaling option is furthermore available. It provides clear information on the system’s protection status at any location. Thus, a solution with monitored arrester backup fuse is available for the first time. The product range comprises 2-, 3-, and 4-pos. modules.

VAL-CP-MOSO60… is a preassembled surge protection solution for 60 mm system technology. The product can be directly snapped on the busbar system without using tools. Due to the universal adapter, VAL-CP-MOSO60 fits on any 5 and 10 mm busbar irrespective of the particular rail profile. In the event of error, the surge voltage resistant high-performance circuit-breaker lockout securely disconnects the faulty surge arrester from the power supply system. After replacing the faulty protective plug, the LS machine can be switched on again. It is not necessary to replace the backup fuse. VAL-CP-MOSO60 is available as adapter for 3- and 4-conductor systems.

New Surge Arresters for Photovoltaic Systems

In addition to the already existing arrester sets for photovoltaic systems, further versions for systems with a nominal voltage of 1000V DC are now available. Just like the already existing solutions, the two new set solutions PV-SET 1000 DC (2804445) and PV-SET 1000 DC/AC (2804458) are also accommodated in IP65 housings. Unlike PV-SET 1000 DC/AC, preassembled, system-specific multi-contact plug connectors simplify the installation of PV-SET 1000 DC in existing systems. PV-SET 1000 DC/AC is particularly suited to protect inverters. Here, the AC side of the inverter is protected in addition to the DC voltage side.

Compact arrester blocks for the inverter inputs L+ / L- and/or solar strings are also available. VAL-MS 1000DC/2+V-FM (2920502) is a compact solution with three temperature-monitored protective plugs with status display, dynamic disconnect device and remote indication contact. VAL-MS 1000DC/1+V… (2804490 with remote indication contact, and/or 2804542 without FM contact) provides the same features for systems grounded on one side and can be applied to protect thin-layer modules.

The diploma theses were evaluated by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Alexander Kern (University of Applied Sciences Aachen). Together with the President of the Committee for Lightning Protection and Research at ABB, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Klaus Stimper, the young talent award was presented to the two graduate engineers. The prize money was endowed by the company Blitzschutzbau Rhein-Main Adam Herbert GmbH from Aachen and handed over by Heinz-Josef Krämer.
